Saint Eugene de Mazenod (1782 -1861)

He founded in 1816 in Aix-en-Provence, France, the « Society of Missionaries of Provence », recognized in 1826 by Pope Leo XII as « Congregation of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate ».

He became bishop of Marseilles in 1837.

Beatified on October 19, 1975 by Pope Paul VI and canonized on December 3, 1995 by Pope John Paul II. He was celebrated on May 21 as the ardent apostle of the poor and missionary founder.
