First General Assembly of the Oblate Lay Associates of the Province of Congo

The chaplain of the lay Oblate associates of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola presided over the opening Mass in the Saint Eloi Church of Kinshasa-Barumbu on Saturday, December 07 for the very first general assembly of the Missionary Association of Mary Immaculate (AMMI).

Commenting on the Gospel of the day, Father Adolphe Vunga emphasized how the lay Oblate associates dedicate themselves to responding to the Lord's call: « the harvest is abundant, but the workers few. » The lay associates therefore come to evangelize the world in their own way, on the traves of Saint Eugene de Mazenod, founder of the Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate.

Father Vunga also referred to the example of the saint of the day, St.Ambroise, acclaimed for his zeal and faith. The secret of success for the lay Oblate associates will always be prayer, union with God.

The lay associates, men and women, form a family with their Oblate brothers and priests of Mary Immaculate. At the opening of the works, in the Oblate house in Kinshasa-Barumbu, the provincial superior of the Oblates in the DRC and Angola, Father Constant Kienge-Kienge, recalled the wish of Saint Eugene de Mazenod to see the Oblate family be the most welded in the world to witness Jesus Christ.

The general assembly of Oblate lay associates is also elected. Delegates from Angola and the Dioceses of Idiofa, Kikwit and Kinshasa will choose a President to succeed Louis Kitenge, acting President since 2019.
