A training session on archiving at the Université de Mazenod in Kinshasa

The archivist of the General Administration of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, Father Jérôme Velichor, came from Rome to host a training session at the Université de Mazenod de Kinshasa. From 14 to 17 November 2025, the training on archiving (ecclesiastical) is free of charge to the public, from 8:30 to 12:00.

At the opening of the works, the Rector of the University, Father Clement Fiyungu, presented the session aimed at serving the truth by serving the Church and society through the preservation of memory and the continuation of works.

The University's Secretary for Research, Father Didier Mupaya, acknowledged that archives are one of the living resources, governance tools and vectors of innovation. He showed the relevance of the training workshop by the structural, technical and cultural challenges of the archives for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Thus, there is a weak archival culture, violent and sometimes massive destruction of archives in the event of conflicts. In particular, there is a lack of infrastructure and staff and a clear delay in digitisation.

Through four-day exchanges, the Université de Mazenod intends to highlight archiving as a vital necessity and a common responsibility.

On the first day of the workshop, Father Jérôme Velichor explained what he meant by the archiving ministry in order to generate interest in ensuring the future based on memory, the memory of the past while the world is threatened with amnesia. It is indeed a duty of memory, legal and moral.
